Fellow hapless student 1- I read about Marx's idea of false conciousness/the distinction between class for itself and of itself/something else about Marx expressed in very long words. I really agree with that interpretation of his thought.

I've been avoiding reading some of the big feminist blogs recently because hearing about sexism constantly does get me down, and I need to try and stay in the happy place. Because in the non-happy place I can't function properly.

But it's not that easy. I can't escape living in a sexist world. I'm still hearing sexist comments every day. And I can't just dismiss them as coming from someone in another country, or a drunk old man in a pub in suburbia. They're being said by my peers, people I consider my friends. People I can't avoid, and mostly don't want to avoid. And saying something about it might make it worse, because they'll deliberately bait me.

I don't have the energy to be fighting back all the time, but neither can I tolerate being constantly insulted.

And the pub quiz machine in the college bar has a Nuts game on it.

And I had to give up on one of the web comics I discovered because of the constant references to violence against women.

So I'm going to get involved with Amnesty International and the university feminist group.

If I'd been able to get access to the previous exam papers from home, and if I'd known earlier that it would definitely be last year's exam paper my life would be so much easier. As it is, I'm frantically trying to find enough information to answer the essays I half know how to answer. And I haven't written an essay by hand in over a year. Oh dear.

The Princess Bride

A group of my male friends recently refused to watch 'The Princess Bride' on he grounds that it's a 'girly movie'. Leaving alone the sexism in the way that girls who watch stereotypically male movies are seen as cooler, and guys who watch stereotypically female movies lose respect, something else bothered me.

On of them said that 'princess' and 'bride' are the too girliest words he could think of.

'Princess' -pink, pretty, marriagable, powerless, vulnerable.

Catherine of Aragon was daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, and Princess of Wales. And then her husband died, and she lost her status and was cast into poverty until her brother-in-law married her.

Her daughter Mary went from being Princess Mary, treasured heir of the King and Queen of England, to being the Lady Mary - a bastard, separated from her mother and rejected by her father.

Being a princess is a very precarious position. You're close enough to the throne to be the focus for rebellions, but the political power you can wield is very limited. Your hand in marriage is much sought after but engagements to you are made and broken in the interest of other people, and in some cases it could be treason to arrange your own marriage. The best you can hope for is becoming queen, and that has it's own dangers.

Then there's bride - female because weddings are meant to be every girl's dream. Every girl's dream to define herself in relation to a man. 'Groom' is not considered masculine to the extent that 'bride' is considered feminine, because men are not seen as defined to the same extent by their relationship with the opposite sex.

Seriously? Those are the two words that most relate to my gender? Fuck that.

(The Princess Bride is a great movie by the way. Apart from the complete lack of half decent female characters.)

Last night I took someone to hospital. He managed to fall over, hit his head on the dance floor and then jump up and keep dancing. He only realised there was something wrong when people started staring. And then he just wanted to go to bed despite the fact that there was blood running down his face onto his shirt.

We ended up spending 4 hours waiting around in A and E, but it was fine as he just got glued up and sent home.

Last night was a really good night. I went to a charity performance in college, out to a club then had friends in my room talking and stealing my biscuits until about 2 in the morning. It was fun. Mostly.

Apart from the guy at the charity performance who sang about how women couldn't drive. It was an adaptation of the song from the 'Sheila's Wheels' adverts which was meant to be funny. Based on the idea that women are rubbish drivers, which is neither new nor true, and is just blatant sexism.

And then there was the soft porn being played on the TV screens in the club. Soft porn entirely devoid of men. Just lots and lots of breasts.

And then there's the way that one of my male friends does not get that calling someone a 'whore' repeatedly and trying to make her ashamed of her sexual behaviour really isn't OK. Even when it's clearly upsetting her.

According to Asser, his biographer, Alfred was descended from Noah and Adam. It makes sense for Asser to claim this as Alfred was a Christian king. What makes slightly less sense to me is that his descent is also traced through Woden and Geat, who were pagan gods.

Baklava and black coffee.

Very nice together. But baklava makes your fingers sticky which is bad if you are trying to read and take notes.

And the sugar and caffeine can make you hyper, which makes it rather difficult not to giggle in your lecture. Particularly if that lecture mentions bottom baring and the use of giant sausages as phallic imagery.

And then you get a combined sugar and caffeine crash. Not fun.

All in all, baklava is not a sensible breakfast food.

From an e-mail about my short stories- 'It's unusual to see lesbianism dealt with in such a normal manner. I mean that in the best way. Normally it's either entertainment for men or seen as an ugly fetish so this sort of stuff is a nice corrective.'

I'm adapting one of my short stories into a monologue for the fresher's drama competition, which is exciting but also a bit daunting, as I'll have to make it considerably longer.

P.s. I know I should be leaving any room and being sociable, and I shall do as soon as my throat feels better and I can actually talk. My voice is gone completely at the moment.
